5 Questions with James Scott

rsz_26522282_origWhat is your favourite swear word?
I’m rather partial to ‘bugger’. It’s plosive enough to vent, but doesn’t upset my mother too much.

What are you wearing?
Two dollar jeans from the Salvos. And socks.

What is love?
I think Love is about you, not about me. It is often confused with passion. Love can’t be neatly summarised in a short answer, so for a full definition I recommend you come and see Lies, Love and Hitler.

What was the last show you saw, and how many stars do you give it?
I am totally opposed to the notion of giving stars. It implies that I sit in judgement and that I think you should listen to my opinion. I don’t want that kind of responsibility.

Is your new show going to be any good?
Absolutely. Five stars. What are you waiting for?

James Scott is appearing in Lies, Love and Hitler, with Canberra Academy of Dramatic Art.
Show dates: 15 Apr – 3 May, 2014
Show venue: The Old Fitzroy Hotel

rsz_gordon_head_2_What is your favourite swear word?
Nuts. Started using it while reading Raymond Chandler. Try it, it’s fun.

What are you wearing?
Paint.

Love is all you need. Love is all there is, the alpha & the omega. Love is what will be left at the end.

What was the last show you saw, and how many stars do you give it?
Warhorse, 3.5 stars.

Gawd.

White jeans and t-shirt.

Love is God.

What was the last show you saw, and how many stars do you give it?
Romeo & Juliet. My daughter played Juliet at Cranbrook school last week and it was great. 5 stars, best school production I’ve ever seen. Last professional production was Waiting For Godot, 5 stars there too.

5 Questions with Sinead Curry

sineadcurryWhat is your favourite swear word?
Fuck.

What are you wearing?
Lonely Hearts underwear, a leather shirt and Rollas Jeans with bare feet. Denim all day, err’day.

What is love?
Love is nourishment, warmth, light and air. It’s everywhere! Do something with love or don’t do it at all. Love is an all-encompassing, bold, boundless embrace of acceptance, tenderness, humour, and friendship. In loving another, I grow and learn to better nurture myself and the world.

What was the last show you saw, and how many stars do you give it?
I recently saw Noises Off by STC at the Opera House; 5 bell-bottomed, shag-pile-upholstered stars. I love irreverent English comedy. I laugh-cried my mascara off and left the theatre looking like Alice Cooper. FEED MY FRANKENSTEIN.

Is your new show going to be any good?
Yes! Brave New Word Theatre Co’s debut production of Dancing Naked In The Backyard (written by Chris Naylor) restores my faith in community spirit. It’s a charming tale of the lengths the kooky, unsuspecting residents of Hinton Street will go too, to protect the neighbourhood they love.

Sinead Curry is appearing in Dancing Naked In The Backyard.
Show dates: 15 – 26 Apr, 2014
Show venue: TAP Gallery
ps (11 Apr announcement from Brand New Word Theatre): “Due to unforeseen circumstances, the role of Cathy in Dancing Naked In The Backyard will now be played by Zasu Towle.”

5 Questions with Megan Drury

megandruryWhat is your favourite swear word?
Favourite, “Cunt” – delicious in the mouth (innuendo intended)
Most used, “Fuck” – and it’s various conjugations (pun intended)
For particularly frustrating moments (and only to myself) I find a whole improvised emphatic grammatically incorrect string of random expletives very useful.

What are you wearing?
Oh, um… undies.

What is love?
1) An English word used to linguistically interpret strong feelings of compassion, affection, appreciation, attraction, attachment…
2) Freedom and liberation from fear / Pure creativity / An incredible flow of boundless, open energy
3) The Beast (reference: Bloodletting, Concrete Blonde. circa 1990)

What was the last show you saw, and how many stars do you give it?
I saw two shows last week. Stars, out of 5… Stop Kiss 4 1/2, and Once In Royal David’s City 3 1/2.

Is your new show going to be any good?
I’m in a repertory season of two Shakespeare plays! And yes… yes… a thousand times yes!! Twelfth Night, Or What You Will is a remount, so we already know it’s a wonderful, lively, hilarious, moving, joy of a production! You won’t have seen a Twelfth Night like this ever, come along! And… All’s Well That Ends Well is going to be remarkable! Reshaped and freshly interpreted. A rarely performed Shakespeare, it’s an absolute must see, don’t miss it!

Megan Drury is appearing in Twelfth Night and All’s Well That Ends Well.
Show dates: 27 Mar – 12 Apr, 2014
Show venue: Seymour Centre

5 Questions with Vanessa Cole

vanessacoleWhat is your favourite swear word?
I say shit a lot. It’s simple, it’s old fashioned but it’s good.

What are you wearing?
My staples: a smile, an element of corny and my pyjamas.

What is love?
Holy shit. Love is everything. It sends you crazy and completely sane at the same time. It’s insatiably addictive. It’s courage-making. It’s here to stay.

What was the last show you saw, and how many stars do you give it?
Clybourne Park at Ensemble. It’s excellent. Poignant, moving and wonderfully executed.

Is your new show going to be any good?
No. Ok, that’s a lie :p It’s going to be brill! It’s adorable, it’s dark, it’s surreal. There are puppets, monsters and skinks, AND it explores characters and themes we generally don’t see on stage. This is my kind of show. Winning!

Vanessa Cole is appearing in Cough.
Show dates: 10 – 20 Apr, 2014
Show venue: 107 Projects

5 Questions with Saro Lusty-Cavallari

sarolustycavallariWhat is your favourite swear word?
I appreciate the classics. Fuck has to be one of the most fluid words, profane or otherwise, we have at our disposal. “The night was fucked”. Was it good? Was it bad? Such is the wonder of the word that is fuck.

What are you wearing?
T-shirt and jeans… yeah my creativity does not extend to my wardrobe.

What is love?
Giving up your own sense of privacy and self and sharing it with someone else. Either that or “baby don’t hurt me.”

What was the last show you saw, and how many stars do you give it?
Bell Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale and I think I’ll go ahead and give it 5. I love when some kind of weird, potentially gimmicky concept is done so well you think there is no other way of performing it.

Is your new show going to be any good?
Pirandello was getting pretty sick of proscenium arches, kitchen sinks and fourth walls in 1921. They’ve stuck around and if you’re still sick of them then come see our play because it’s no less out there in 2014.

Saro Lusty-Cavallari is directing Six Characters In Search Of An Author for Sydney University Dramatic Society.
Show dates: 26 – 29 Mar, 2014
Show venue: Studio B, University of Sydney

5 Questions with Brett O’Neill

rsz_1069168_10201646988048453_838512451_nWhat is your favourite swear word?
Piece-a-shit!!! It just slips out… A lot…

What are you wearing?
I was in my Peter Alexander pyjamas but now I am not.

What is love?
Love is cuddling while a storm is raging outside. Metaphorically and physically.

What was the last show you saw, and how many stars do you give it?
Merrily We Roll Along on Digital Theatre. 5/5. A truly touching, funny and heartbreaking staging of this musical. Everyone should buy it online. And all of the other ones. I may have done this. Maybe.

I would have loved to have said Sweet Charity (I was even rehearsing on their set) but I was one of the unfortunate buggers who missed out on a ticket for this one (yay for selling out though!!!)

Is your new show going to be any good?
Judging by the standing ovation we got for our last preview, I think we’re on a winner here. This is the feel-good show Sydney needs. In the afterglow of Charity, our tickets are selling like hotcakes so people need to book right this second. (Not a marketing ploy. I know someone that sold 3 of their kids to see this show, even though the tickets are reasonably priced)

Brett O’Neill is appearing in The Drowsy Chaperone, with Squabbalogic Independent Music Theatre.
Show dates: 14 Mar – 6 Apr, 2014
Show venue: Hayes Theatre Co

5 Questions with Alexandra Howard‏

rsz_alexandra_howard_654x820What is your favourite swear word?
I am not sure that I have a favourite as such and it probably isn’t even considered a swearword, but my most common would be “idiotic”. It can sum up a lot of things.

What are you wearing?
A black pencil skirt and white Forever New blouse. Unfortunately, the starving actor phase didn’t suit me very well and I had a to get a secondary desk job, complete with business attire.

What is love?
Haha if I knew the answer to that question, I wouldn’t have needed to write my current show.

What was the last show you saw, and how many stars do you give it?
The Black Cat, 3.5 stars. Entertaining, good subject.

Is your new show going to be any good?
I hope so. We have a small team who all believe in this production. Please note Wonderland contains implied sex scenes, swearing and monsters… and who doesn’t love a show with a disclaimer!

Alexandra Howard‏’s new show is Wonderland, with Lexx Productions.
Show dates: 8 – 12 Apr, 2014
Show venue: Seymour Centre
